Pets of the Month

Our REAL pets of the month...
Are any of our wonderful Adult Pets.

*Kittens & Puppies are cute & cuddly but an adult cat or dog --- Now there is a pet with experience ! It is hard to resist kittens & puppies with their show stealing, tail chasing and other antics *BUT* . . .
*While you are being entertained by energetic kittens & puppies, there is a seasoned veteran waiting in the wings with just as much love to give, with an added charm that comes only with mature adulthood -- YOU are an adult and you are rather swell, just ask us!
*Adult cats have learned to sleep near your head, NOT on it; NOT to climb the drapes or blinds; NOT to climb into the oven, refrigerator or dryer when you are not looking; their size is now fixed; they still like to play like kittens, BUT know how to keep their claws in check; their personality is known and they are appreciative.
*Adult dogs have learned to sleep at the foot of your bed, NOT on your pillow. They have learned to NOT dig a hole in your carpet. They have learned to *GO* outside. Their size too is fixed yet they love to play. Their personality is known and they are appreciative.
*Sturdy and easy-going many adult pets readily adapt to a home with young children. And they will not be dashing between and under the feet of a senior citizen.
*While kittens & puppies are busy exploring, the adult is content to curl-up on your lap or at your feet and offer an attentive ear or a consoling purr. (Or NOT if that is what you prefer.)
*Best of all, adopting an adult cat or dog is offering him or her a second chance at life and as the song goes *Love is better the second time around*.

Please give our adults your kind consideration. Thank you.

Who We Are

"Warm Hearts For Cold Noses"

LIFELINE FOR PETS is a State & Federally Incorporated Non-Profit Rescue Organization.
Lifeline was incorporated by the state of California in 1982. It was formed in June of 1981 by Lynne Jordan and Midge Poynter under the name Pet Lifeline. Midge and Lynne were involved in animal rescue work independent of each other until they met through an exchange of letters in the Virginia Kay column of the Pasadena Star-News. Lynne is a management analyst, retired from Federal civil service. Midge is a noted author of books for school children, one of which is "Too Few Happy Endings", a story of humane societies. She has also written, "What is One More?", about the work of animal rescuers. Both books are still sometimes available thru Amazon or other book stores.

Today there are five members on the LIFELINE FOR PETS Board of Directors. Some care for cats and some care for dogs. Working with these directors are several additional volunteer foster parents in Los Angeles, Kern and Orange counties.

Dogs and cats are acquired by LIFELINE in one of three ways - adoption from an animal shelter; picked up from the street as strays; or by owner relinquishment, either voluntary or involuntary. In all cases, the animals are quarantined in an animal hospital to insure their good health. Injuries and illnesses are treated. Necessary shots are given. If the animal is well enough, spaying or neutering is done. In the case of strays, a conscientious effort is made to find the owner. When medically sound, the animal is brought to the home of one of the LIFELINE FOR PETS Directors or to the home of one of our approved volunteers. Here it is observed for a suitable time to determine its behavior traits. If possible, bad habits are corrected. Because of this period of personal observation, an honest and knowledgeable appraisal of the animal can be given to its prospective new owner.

WHY DO WE HAVE SUCH A LENGTHY ADOPTION PROCEDURE?

LIFELINE FOR PETS does not offer instant gratification. While most everyone feels the urge to take home that cute little kitty or puppy, we want you to consider the serious responsibility of pet ownership. Do you have the time to give a kitten or puppy the consistent and gentle discipline it needs? Would unexpected vet bills, now or in the future, put a financial hardship on you or your family? Have you thought about how future changes in your life will affect the life of your pet? The average life expectancy for a cat or dog is 15 years. Are you ready to make that kind of commitment? We hope the LIFELINE adoption procedure will help you seriously consider the step you are taking by adopting a pet.

WHY DO WE DELIVER THE ANIMAL TO YOUR HOME AND HAVE A TRIAL PERIOD?

LIFELINE FOR PETS primary purpose is to ensure that the animal and its adoptive family are well-matched and that the welfare and happiness of the pet will continue in its new environment. We have found that delivering the pet directly from its foster home to its new permanent home helps make the adjustment less stressful for everyone. The Trial Period: If the perfect match is not made, we will gladly take back the pet. Your adoption donation will be refunded at that time, provided the pet is healthy upon its return. We want to encourage you to contact LIFELINE FOR PETS if there are ever any questions or problems regarding your adopted pet. By this more personal approach, we hope to open a line of communication which will be ongoing throughout the life of your adopted cat or dog. In Addition: LIFELINE FOR PETS stands ready to take back the animal at any time during its lifetime if the owner finds that he/she/they can no longer keep it.

PET HOTLINE

A telephone hotline is maintained to receive calls about animals needing homes; to receive calls from people who want animals; to advise people on how to locate their lost pets; to record information on animal abuse or abandonment; to advise people how to properly place their animals should they choose to try; to help and advise people who have adopted pets from LIFELINE.

...THE FUTURE...

The Future is NOW: The Internet has provided a way for linking up with other animal rescue organizations and establishing various networks which disseminate information among all groups as to animals needing homes and individuals who want pets. As well as the sharing of community needs, laws, special events, ideas, health, care and feeding information.

ADOPTING A PET

CATS
Our current (as of January 2006) Feline Adoption Fee is $85.00.
See below for WHAT IS PROVIDED for this fee.
Microchipped cats/kittens are $100.00
Most of our cats ARE microchipped or will be prior to placement.

DOGS
The Canine Adoption Fee varies. Size, age & breed determine the cost of adoption. See below for WHAT IS PROVIDED for this fee.
Microchipping is an extra $15.00 and done prior to placement, unless the rescue has already been chipped. Then the extra charge will be automatically included.

When the animal is deemed ready for adoption, ads are placed in newspapers and CATS/kittens are shown on Saturdays or Sundays at a reputable pet store or at our "Cat Pad"; DOGS/puppies are shown by appointment. Prospective owners are carefully screened and their homes and yards inspected for suitability. Approved adopters keep the pet home for a Two Week Trial Period. If at the end of that time the adoption is suitable in the view of BOTH the adopter and LIFELINE FOR PETS , all papers relating to the animal are given to the new owner. If a match is NOT made the animal is returned to LIFELINE FOR PETS.

OUR ADOPTION PROCEDURE IN BRIEF
*1. Look over the selection of cats/dogs at our adoption events. For dogs, please schedule an appointment to view.
*2. If you do not find what you want, please ask. (Tis' but the tip of the iceberg!)
*3. Read over the LIFELINE Procedure Document.
*4. Complete a LIFELINE Application.
*5. Interview with a LIFELINE Director &/or Volunteer.
*6. Schedule a mutually convenient time with the foster parent to inspect your home and then to deliver the pet to your home.
We do not release any pets from our adoption event locations.
*7. Upon delivery, review the Contract, sign it and pay the Adoption Fee.
If you'd like to pay an additional, tax deductible, donation we would welcome your generosity on behalf of our rescues.
*8. Complete the Two Week Trial Period (see explanation above).
And, if applicable, the Co-Ownership Period.

Included in the Adoption Fee donation:
ALL ADOPTED PETS - Prior To Placement . . .
Are current with their vaccinations, are spayed or neutered, have been
treated for parasites (worms, fleas & ticks), microchipped & cats are blood tested.
We have a lifetime return policy and Lifeline's volunteers
will always be here to assist you with pet questions.
We are always just a phone call, fax or email away.

Please Note that our Primary Consideration in ALL Pet Placement Decisions is the PET !

Most of our pets have had a hard life and some have special needs (such as food, attention, training, security, etc.). We appreciate your understanding how much effort goes into the placement decision. In most cases, considerable work, love and money are expended to rehabilitate these cats, kittens, dogs or puppies. After this considerable investment, it is understandable that we really try hard for a good “fit”.

Please keep in mind that not everyone who applies will get a pet.

This has more to do with THE PET than with the applicant. However, EVERY application will be considered, and is deeply appreciated!

Behavior Problems Account for the Leading Cause of Owner Relinquishment of Pets and Resulting Euthanasia
We all know it and numerous studies confirm it.
Often pet parents just need some help in dealing with the issues they are facing.
PETVIDEO.COM can help.

Petvideo.com, created by the founders of Petfinder.com and Petsincredible, provides free online training clips.

--->>>****************************************<<<---

Should you contact us regarding a pet you have found, or a pet that you must give up, please know that we probably will not be able to take your pet / rescue. We are in need of foster families and our current volunteers have as many pets as they can handle. We deeply sympathize with your situation. We will be happy to assist you in the ways that we can but please note that will probably NOT be taking the animal off of your hands. For that matter: Be wary of any rescue group who DOES have room to immediately take your pet / rescue. We can tell YOU horror stories!!!! Not every group out there is trustworthy. No matter how sweet and nice they may seem.
Check out the sites below for additional information on these cautions.
